Before your tan

How to prep for a spray tan

Most uneven tans start with prep, not the spray. Here is exactly what to do from two days before your appointment to your first rinse, plus a checklist you can print.

How do I prepare for a spray tan?

Exfoliate and shave or wax 24 to 48 hours before your appointment. On the day, arrive with clean, dry skin and no lotion, deodorant, makeup, or perfume, and have loose, dark clothes ready for afterward. Don’t rinse until the time we give you.

Spray tan prep checklist

24–48 hours before

Exfoliate, then shave or wax, a day or two before your tan, so your skin is smooth and any irritation has settled.

Appointment day

Come to your appointment with clean, dry, product-free skin.

During the appointment

Wear what you’re comfortable in, follow the positioning cues, and let each area dry before moving on.

Right after

Keep your skin dry and covered loosely until your first rinse.

Your first rinse

Rinse at the time your technician gives you, with lukewarm water only, and pat dry.

Your technician may adjust these steps for your skin or for Rapid-Rinse timing. Follow the rinse time you’re given at your appointment.

Common prep mistakes

  • Shaving right before

Fresh shaving can leave pores open and skin irritated. Shave at least a day ahead.

  • Lotion on the day

Lotion and deodorant create a barrier that can leave patchy spots. Arrive bare.

  • Tight clothes after

Waistbands, bra straps, and leggings can rub lines into a developing tan.
